Why Are Pattern Exercises Important for People With Parkinson’s?

At Power for Parkinson’s, you’ll notice that we use pattern-based exercises often—and for good reason. Patterns serve a great purpose when it comes to delaying and improving Parkinson’s symptoms, plus, they’re fun! You might find yourself wondering, what exactly are our instructors working on when they introduce patterns into class? The answer is: a lot!

For starters, one of the biggest benefits of pattern-based exercise is its impact on cognitive function. From memory and focus to sequencing and attention, patterns challenge the brain in powerful ways. It’s like giving your brain a mini workout right alongside your body. Over time, this kind of mental engagement helps strengthen neural pathways and supports neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself through learning and experience. With consistent practice of patterns, the brain can adapt and function in new ways. Every time you complete a pattern, you can imagine your brain as a 3D map, where targeted pathways thicken like a busy highway.

Patterns also allow us to address specific Parkinson’s symptoms through movement. While all patterns support brain-body connection and coordination, different movements serve different purposes. For example, a marching pattern incorporating heel-toe variations improves gait, while a reaching pattern involving different directions is aimed at increasing range of motion. Each pattern has intention behind it, supporting both physical and neurological health.

So next time you’re in class or following along with one of our YouTube videos, remember: every pattern you practice is helping your brain grow stronger. That’s something worth celebrating!
