HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
Bubbles Rising in a Glass of Champagne
As I say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new year, I’ve always done this with a glass of champagne (or sparkling grape juice). I enjoy the bubbles racing to the top and absolutely bursting with joy. I see smiles on the faces of everyone involved. That’s not always easy for someone with Parkinson’s. Wishing good health and beginning a new year is a foundation and a place for renewal. I admit, since I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, it’s a challenge to always feel “happy” and find ways to improve my quality of life.
Seeing the Future Through the Eyes of Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s can change how we look at the future. Do we often feel heavy and weighted down? Are we moving slowly? Is our posture bent over? Power for Parkinson’s instructors are always working on posture, recognizing the connection with our mental well-being. Instead of celebrating, we focus on what’s wrong, and the challenges, both physical and mental, Parkinson’s may bring in the new year.
Let’s look at it this way. Every movement we make—no matter how small—is a choice toward strength and balance, and hope and optimism. Parkinson’s may challenge the body, but exercise reminds us that movement is still possible. Progress is still real, slowing the effects of Parkinson’s.
Think of the new year as an opportunity to improve our overall sense of being:
Celebrate and show gratitude - As Michael J. Fox says, gratitude makes optimism sustainable by focusing on what he has versus what he lacks.
Live with hope and optimism.
Develop shared connections - you don’t see single bubbles rising in the glass. You see many rising to the top.
What proven approach can help make this happen?
Movement and Exercise
Every movement we make through exercise—no matter how small—matters. Parkinson’s may challenge the body, but exercise reminds us that movement is still possible and progress is still real. Today isn’t about perfection. As PFP Lead Instructor Lauren Lewis says, “practice makes better, not perfect.”
It’s about showing up. When you show up, and others show up, we lift and inspire each other.
Show up for a Power for Parkinson’s class online, in person, or through support groups. There are many ways to make this happen.
Take a walk and enjoy the surroundings. Be present in the moment. Let this time be a gift to you. Move with intention and be aware of the gift given to you. Move knowing that each step adds to your quality of life.
Don’t wait until next year; find little things in your life to celebrate. They are all around you! Smile…and exercise!
…and yes, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
CHEERS!
